DEPT / EVAL
Alberto Aguilar + Rebecca Hamlin Green
I was invited to curate a project for the alternative space Fountains Foundation 916, founded by artist Leonardo Selvaggio and located in a hallway on the campus of Columbia College Chicago.
For Dept / Eval (shorthand for department evaluation) I invited artists Alberto Aguilar and Rebecca Hamlin Green to explore the Interdisciplinary Arts Department of Columbia College Chicago where I worked at the time.
The artists created the work on site after a guided tour of the department’s facilities, offices, studios and galleries (including the Center for Book and Paper Arts), performance spaces, closets and storage areas. Each artist collected materials along the way, such as tape, ceramic lettering and paper.
Responsive and gestural, these temporary works serve as a department evaluation of sorts, in that they make visible the ephemeral and material characteristics of a thriving graduate art program.
